You guys are killing me.
In arguing over whether the Delorean is gas or nuclear powered in the first movie you completely missed the plot point that the engine in the first movie was constantly stalling. It stalled when Marty parked near the sign, and it stalled again just before he tried to make the last jump to 88. It was all part of the drama of the final moments of the film.
So the car was ALWAYS gas powered. The line about Doc Brown saying it ran on plutonium was an overgeneralization.
